SuSE 11.1 with Amarok, that actually plays mp3’s out of the box…

SuSE finally provides the plugin for mp3’s, via a package that automatically pulls in the mp3 decoder.  Amarok beats itunes too, IMHO:

And notice how Amarok works with wikipedia.  I’ve selected as my wikipedia language Bahasa Indonesia, just to prove a point:

First, there is no conceivable way that a proprietary business model could provide as rich and as user customizable experience as Amarok does now. itunes certainly, for example can’t provide content in as many languages as Amarok does now. Second, the example of two very different projects in the free culture world (Amarok and wikipedia) hooking up to provide a new product is something that is starting to happen more and more, and this particular example is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Recall that the utility of a network increases with the square of the number of connected nodes and it should be clear that, with the tens thousands of open source projects out there, growing at an exponential rate, the possible mash-ups are in the billions, and among all of those there are several that will combine to be the F.O.S.S. ‘killer app’ Once this happens, the transition to FOSS should not only accelerate but become self-accelerating…
